Until a year ago Rio was an Environmental Scientist working for the United Nations. Her mother owns an art gallery. Her mother ( Nessa ) was in her 60s and experiencing health issues after being given two years to live. Her parents divorced early in her childhood due to her mother having an affair but the family had lived in the United States until that point. Her father returned to Canada to take over the family farm and her mother thought it would be easier for Rio to live on the farm.
At 18 years old Rio travelled to the United States to go to university but then returned to Canada to live with her father until he died three years ago in a hunting accident. She had worked with the United Nations as a special envoy for Canada but gave it up when her mother became ill a year ago.
